McKissic would not be moved. She had never been able to make him angry. That was a trait he shared
with the chauffeur. "The difficulty with truthall, Pamela, is that it is absolute. All the truth comes out. I have
obligations that must remain private. What you believe you know about me could prove embarrassing if
publicized, but I assure you G&G would survive it handily. WhatI know could destroy an industry and
lead to wholesale economic anarchy. I must do as I find proper in the time remaining to me."
"In the timeremaining?"
"It seems your little story about my demise was not so farfetched, daughter. I will not govern General
Gyro very much longer."

"But leukemia is curable!"
"Leukemia, yes. This, no."
She looked out over the city again, but the too familiar buildings were repulsive now. The hoppers were
like fruit flies lighting on festering stalks, the highways like festooned cobwebs. "Is that what you brought
me here for?"
"In part, Pamela. To give you certain information and to put one stricture upon you. I have to do it now,
while I am able."
"Not just to lecture me again about teasing people?"
"Most of those people can take care of themselves. I have confidence that in time you will discover that
ethical behavior pays. If you don't, the ring will eventually assist you."
"So you aren't going to have me ringed by that domesticated judge of yours?"
"No."
"What were you going to tell me?"
"Two things, Pamela. First, that Geoffrey Font, Senior, was an innocent man."
"You admit it!"
"I have never denied it. Jeff, also, in a more devious manner, was framed. Since he is the survivor, I am
doing what I can to help him."
"By making him a ringer!"
"That is true, strange enough."
She shook her head as though to clear it of cobwebs. "You have a funny way of helping people,
Daddykins. What was the second thing?"
"That you are my daughter, and I know you for what you are and I love you."
Pamela tried to laugh again, but it didn't come out. "You "
"I wanted you to know."
Half a dozen clever remarks passed through her mind, but all collapsed before the realization that again
he meant it. He knew about her, the obscene conversations, the lies, the teasing seductions, the general
worthlessness concealed behind the cameo facade; he had it all on record yet he loved her.
Perhaps he was the only man who ever had or ever would. Few others saw beyond the cameo, and
those who did were repelled by the selfishness and shallowness there. There was only one who neither
worshipped her nor sought to use her. The most important one: her father.
She did not know how to comment, so she said nothing. Her eyes were blinded by unrehearsed tears.

"What whatever that stricture is, Daddy I'll honor it."
McKissic sighed. "It will not be easy, Pamela. But it is most important."
"I'lldo it! I'll obey, for once. Just tell me. Do you want me to marry the ringer, to make it up to him?
I'll "
"No, Pamela. Quite the opposite. I want you to stay away from him."
Her eyes opened."That's it?Not to marry him?"
"Not even to talk to him again, Pamela. You must drop out of his life entirely. You may do anything else,
but you may not associate with him."
She stared at him. "But you said he was framed. If you won't tell the court, and won't let me "
"In time you will know the reason. Then you will know what to do. Until then, avoid him totally. This is
all I ask of you."
"I don't know whether I can, now," she said. "You know the way I am about wanting what I can't have.
That's why I was so jealous of those secretaries of yours. Can't you tell mewhy?"
"Not yet. Distract yourself in any way you wish, but do not see Jeff Font again. Believe me, this is the
way it must be."
"I'll try," she said. "I don't know how I'll do it, but I'll try."
Ed Bladderwart looked out the window of his shack and lifted another bottle of beer. He drank an ironic
toast to the skyway and its flashing lights none of them on the nearer span.
He wondered whetherit was running along the deserted section, sniffing out edible refuse. The years had
passed, and his sister had long since gotten over the shock of the annulment and her sterilization, and she
had moved to another section of the country. She had had a breakdown when the thing escaped, but
nothing had come of it; probably it had fallen under the wheel of a gyro or drowned in a sewer.
Still it haunted his memories. Such a penalty for one night of reveling under the spray. That's what the
