needed to know when I was close to giving birth, but he ignored that to focus on the
other issue. Ouida, you know that use of this kind of technology has been banned to
us. Westyn has decreed&
I don t give a shit what Westyn has decreed. The truculent note in my voice
surprised me. I hadn t known I was that angry over the situation.
Language!
The snapped order brought my chin up. We weren t playing sexual games right
now, and he didn t get to dismiss my concerns because I hadn t worded them correctly.
Pardon the hell outta my French. I should have said, Westyn can take a flying fuck at
the Moon! Is that better?
Vance surged to his feet, putting space between us before swiveling to face me,
his hands raking through his hair before bunching at his sides in agitation. Whatever
you think about him, Westyn is my alpha, Ouida, and you will respect him. Have you
learned nothing during your time with us?
I leaped to my feet, too, nodding my head vigorously, more than ready for this
confrontation. I ve learned a lot, actually. I ve learned that being magically
supernatural beings doesn t render you guys infallible. You still have the same
strengths and weaknesses inherent to all creatures that live, love and labor here on
Earth. Only Westyn seems to have cultivated all the weaknesses and not many of the
strengths.
Sucking in a deep breath, I continued, Dammit, Vance, I m human, and even I
can smell that he is not the real alpha in this group. He s strangling your pack with
stupid, cowardly restrictions. You ve told me yourself that you guys need new blood to
stop the mounting numbers of infant defects. This group is seriously close to terminal
inbreeding and should be searching out technology, not running from it. Vance, why
can t you see that being isolated as you are is what s slowly killing off your pack?

I broke off, seeing from his closed, angry expression that Vance s mind was
locked in stubbornness. He so didn t want to hear what I was saying, probably because
he d entertained the same thoughts long before I put them into words. And maybe he
was afraid I was right. Maybe he regretted not acting on his doubts before now.
Are you finished?
God, his voice was so cold I caught chill bumps. Still, I wasn t prepared to back
down. Not any longer. I d made a commitment to stay and this was my pack now, my
family. I had the right to voice my complaints and concerns and be granted a fair
hearing. No.
His lips thinned until they almost disappeared, forming a straight line with not a
hint of softness to them& Kinda like his new shitty attitude. Then by all means,
continue.
Look, I m not saying our pack should shout to the world that you re
werewolves, but the members should be out mingling with the rest of the world,
garnering the knowledge that could help solve the problems facing us. The advances
we humans have made in genetics might help us find the answers to the dwindling
number of live female births and early infant mortality of the males. Or maybe there are
others of your kind out there just waiting to be found. Their blood added to the pack s
gene pool could turn everything around. Instead, the majority of pack members are
confined to this small, medieval world of Westyn s. Can t you see he s still mired in the
tenth century?
Again that stony expression.
Running my hands through my almost shoulder-length curls, I sighed in
exasperation. There had to be a way to get through to my obstinate mate. Vance, I ve
seen how the other wolves, the sentinels, run things past you before going to Westyn. If
you ask them, they d agree with me. You d make a far better alpha. Instead, you re
leading from the rear. That s not fair to anyone. You should bump Westyn out of the
top posit --
Camille Anthony Bunny Tails: Bad Hare Day - 65 -
It is not your place to pass judgment. Vance s harsh interruption was spoken
through gritted teeth. Nor is it your right to determine who should be the alpha of the
Forrester pack. As my mate --
It was my turn to cut in. As your mate it is my right to complain when
somebody else s asinine strictures limit my choices. And you know what, Vance? I m
complaining. I don t think it s fair that Westyn gets to dictate how I live my life. I miss
Xen and the boys, and I m not even allowed to stay in contact with them? Nobody
asked me what I wanted. Westyn decreed, and that was it.
A deep sigh lifted Vance s broad chest. Ouida, I miss them too, all right? A
frustrated expression on his face, he squeezed his eyes shut and pinched his nose
between thumb and forefinger. Dropping his hand and opening his eyes, he pinned me
with a fulminating glare. You have no idea what you are talking about, no inkling of
how this pack is organized. His voice changed to the lowest register of bass, rumbling
in my chest as well as his own. You have no idea what I went through to put him in
the position in the first place!
Now that really pissed me off. I stepped up to Vance, going toe-to-toe, matching
him glare for glare. Then you d better bring me up to speed, because if I m to be here
for the long term, I m no longer willing to remain silent about how I feel& about
anything!
His eyes chilled. Their pale, arctic blue leeched out to a wintery gray. What the
fuck does that mean? When have you ever remained silent? When have I ever asked
that of you?
My fist bounced off his chest. I was against Xen leaving in the first place. I want
to stay in contact with him and the boys. And you know what? I m going to. I reached
